FREE LANDSCAPING PRICING GUIDE
How much can you discount a landscaping quote and still make money?
A customer asks for 10% off. Before agreeing, check what happens to your margin if labor takes longer or materials cost more. GroviaBid's free calculator models both risks.

The maximum safe discount formula
Step 1: Add direct job costs, overhead, and contingency.
Step 2: Add possible extra labor and material costs to get your revised modeled cost.
Step 3: Divide revised cost by (1 − minimum gross margin as a decimal). This is the lowest acceptable selling price.
Step 4: Subtract that minimum price from your original quote. A negative result means there is no safe discount under your assumptions.
Worked example: planting project
Suppose direct costs are $1,783.00. With 15% overhead and 5% contingency, modeled cost is $2,139.60. A 30% target margin gives a suggested quote of $3,056.58.
Now model 20% extra labor cost and 10% extra material cost. Revised cost becomes $2,378.20. To preserve a 15% margin, the lowest acceptable price is $2,797.89. The maximum safe discount is therefore $258.69, or about 8.5%. A 10% discount would fall below the chosen margin floor.
Check my actual job costs →What to tell a customer asking for a lower price
“I can look at options to reduce the price while protecting the essential work. We could remove an optional item, adjust the materials, or split the project into phases. I'll put the revised scope in writing so everything is clear.”
Frequently asked questions
Is markup the same as gross margin?
No. A 25% markup on $100 cost produces a $125 quote and a 20% gross margin. Margin is profit divided by selling price; markup is profit divided by cost.
What if my original quote is already too low?
If it is below the minimum acceptable price, the safe discount is zero. Review missing costs or revise the scope before making promises.
Can I use the result as a final estimate?
Use it as an internal pricing aid. Confirm quantities, supplier quotes, taxes, site conditions, insurance, and exclusions. Put changes and payment terms in writing.
Why focus on discounts?
Other free tools, including Verdis and Landscape Estimate Pro, help contractors set a starting price. GroviaBid focuses on what happens after negotiation and cost overruns.
